Born in Canada, Jeff Brown did all the things he was supposed to do to become successful in the eyes of the world. He was on the Dean’s Honor List as an undergraduate. He won the Law and Medicine prize in law school. He apprenticed with famous criminal lawyer, Eddie Greenspan. It had been Jeff’s lifelong dream to practice criminal law and search for the truth in the courtroom.
But then, on the verge of opening a law practice, he heard a little voice inside telling him to stop, just stop. With great difficulty, he honored this voice and began a heartfelt quest for the truth that lived within him. Although he didn’t realize it then, he was actually questing for his innate image, the essential being that he came into this lifetime to embody. He was searching for his authentic face.
As part of his journey, Jeff did some cool things. He studied Bioenergetics and did session work with co-founder Alexander Lowen. He practiced as a body-centered psychotherapist. He completed an M.A. in Psychology at Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco. He also co-founded the Open Heart Gang, a benevolent gang with a heartfelt intention. Their first act of gratitude is a documentary about Jeff’s connection to Bhagavan Das (of Be Here Now fame). Called Karmageddon, this film includes wonderful dialogues with Jeff and spiritual teacher Ram Dass, yogis Seane Corn and David Newman, and chanters Deva Premal and Miten.
But the most important thing Jeff did was the inner work. By going inside and connecting his spirituality with his emotional life, he learned essential lessons. By learning to surrender to the School of Heart Knocks (the school of life), he found his authentic face. Through this more authentic lens, he was called to write Soulshaping, a grounded and magical inner travelogue that takes the reader along the paths he walked, paths we can all relate to in meaningful ways. Although he resisted it at first, it soon became obvious that honoring the call was his best defence against sleeplessness. If he wrote, he slept. If he didn’t, he lay awake all night. This is in the nature of a calling. This video captures some of his creative process: http://bit.ly/Chaotic_Magnificence
After completing the manuscript, Jeff received an offer to publish from a leading spiritual publisher. He was tempted by it, but he didn’t agree with the limitations on the word count in the contract. He turned the offer down. He had written a book about the importance of honouring one’s soul-scriptures to the letter- How could he ignore his own? In November 2007, he self-published the first edition of Soulshaping. Called ‘Soulshaping: Adventures in Self-Creation’, the book was met with a profound and often serendipitous response, and quickly gathered a following on Facebook, where a soulpod formed in support of Jeff’s efforts. Soon thereafter, a homeless man began selling dozens of books on the streets of Toronto from his push cart. Around the same time, the Soulshaping website capacity had to be expanded because so many people were listening to Jeff’s first audio podcast “The Little Voice that Knows”. It was time to find the right publisher.
The new edition of Soulshaping (A Journey of Self-Creation) was published by North Atlantic Books on August 25, 2009. In 2010, the messages of Sacred Purpose and Grounded Spirituality at the heart of Soulshaping caught fire. Among many other interviews, Jeff was interviewed by CNN Radio and completed a one hour taping for the widely aired consciousness network- New Dimensions Radio. He also appeared on the ‘God Talk show’ on Fox News.com. Additionally, Jeff was invited to write a series of Weekly Inspirations for ABC’S Good Morning America and articles for the Washington Post’s On Faith Blog, Insight Magazine (Australia) and Synergy Magazine.
On September 20, 2010, Jeff wrote a blog called ‘Apologies to the Divine Feminine- from a warrior in transition’ that immediately went viral on Facebook. That piece has been widely posted, published and translated and read by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Two FB fan pages sprung up around the Apologies (to the divine masculine, to the sacred feminine), and it is now frequently utilized by relationship practitioners and healers worldwide. Jeff then wrote another highly popular apology- Apologies to the Sacred Masculine- and an additional gender piece – The Awakening Man (A Portrait of Possibility for Humankind) – that continue to reverberate. All of his gender pieces have been published on the popular website Spirit of Ma’at, where he is a regular contributor. Jeff was subsequently invited to be interviewed with other leaders in the field at the Awakened Men’s Summit in May, 2011.
Jeff has just completed his second book- a book of his quotes, excerpts and popular Facebook status called ‘Ascending with both feet on the Ground: Words to Awaken your heart’. Beautifully endorsed by best-selling authors Oriah Mountain Dreamer, Elizabeth Lesser, Katherine Woodward Thomas, Freeman Michaels and Grace Cirocco, ‘Ascending’ will be available for sale soon. In addition, Karmageddon has now been completed and is going to festival in 2012. An engaging, exciting and profound film, it is expected to make a strong impact in the spiritual community and beyond. The related website- Karmageddonthemovie- will be active this spring.
At present, Jeff is in Toronto working on his next two books: (1) a book that clarifies and articulates the spiritual model at the heart of his work; (2) a higher consciousness love story. Surrounded and supported by the Open Heart Gang- spiritual activists with their hearts on their sleeves- he is also continuing to do all that he can to bring his message of grounded spirituality and sacred purpose to those who may benefit.
